Forget the spring clean and do this instead

Every spring, the same thing happens. Articles and Instagram posts appear, telling you to tackle every cupboard and every drawer. Ideally, the whole house top to bottom.

I don’t know about you but for me (even as a professional home organiser), the thought is exhausting. And for most people, that’s exactly where it ends – as a thought, with a side of guilt.

Here’s the thing – a full spring clean isn’t realistic for most of us. Life is busy, time is limited and when the task feels huge, you often don’t start at all.

So I’d like to suggest something different this year.

One space, done properly

Instead of trying to overhaul everything at once, pick one area that’s been bothering you and give it some proper attention.

That’s all – no whole-house plan, no weekend blocked out and absolutely no pressure to keep going once you’re done.

A seasonal reset like this (smaller, more manageable, actually useful) will do far more for you than a spring clean that never happens.

organising laundry from the wardrobe

Start with your wardrobe

Your wardrobe is a natural place to begin at this time of year. You’ve had winter things in rotation all season and the start of brighter days signal the right time to swap things over. Bring out the lighter layers and fold away the heavier ones.

And while the drawers are empty and the wardrobe is cleared out, you’ve got the perfect moment to give the space itself a quick wipe down. This cleaning happens as part of the process, not a separate task you have to psyche yourself up for.

Let it ripple outwards

Once your wardrobe is sorted, the reset can naturally extend into the rest of the bedroom if you want to keep going. How about a bedside table? The dressing table? Or that pile of toiletries that’s been growing since Christmas?

Speaking of which, if you still have seasonal stragglers (books or bits of holiday decor that didn’t quite make it into storage when they should have), now is a good time to deal with them.

Keep seasonal items together in one place – that way they’re not taking up space all year round, and you actually know where they are when you need them.

Tackling one small area at a time means a whole room can end up sorted without it ever feeling like a big project.

The mistake I see all the time

If a seasonal reset has you thinking about storage, I want to mention something first: always declutter before you buy anything new.

It’s one of the most common mistakes I come across – buying baskets, boxes or drawer dividers before knowing what actually needs to be stored. You end up organising things you don’t need, buying the wrong size for the space and wondering why it still feels cluttered.

Declutter first and the right solution usually becomes obvious. You’ll know what you’re keeping, how much there is and what will actually work in the space.

It’s also worth looking at what you already have before heading to the shops. Repurposing containers and baskets you own works really well – and it’s better for the environment.

You don’t have to do it all

Choosing one space that’s been getting to you and giving it a bit of care takes perfection and pressure away from a seasonal reset.
