J, South Queensferry

The challenge

When J reached out, she described herself as “a tired ADHD mum who can’t manage her life.”

Her kitchen had gradually become overwhelming. Cupboards were rammed full, there was nowhere to put food shopping and the understair cupboard had become a dumping ground. There were no clear systems and every attempt to find something came with background stress.

Until the kitchen felt under control, everything else in the house felt harder.

The approach

We focused fully on the kitchen first. Every cupboard was emptied so we could see exactly what was there. Non-food items were sorted, followed by food (checking dates and removing what was no longer needed).

Items were grouped like with like. Duplicates were reduced and we created clear, logical zones for everyday use.

Once decluttered, we rebuilt the cupboards intentionally. Food was organised into labelled areas and storage was simplified. Everyday items were placed where they made sense for how J and her family actually use the space. The goal wasn’t perfection – it was function.

The outcome

The impact was immediate. Worktops were clear and there was space to put shopping away. Everything had a defined home and made sense.

J said she felt she could “breathe again” in her own home. What had once felt chaotic and draining became organised, functional and easy to use.

The systems were tailored to her brain and her life – not a generic solution but one that genuinely reduced stress.
